Sea Beach

Stenza 1
The cardboard shows me how it was
When the two girl cousins went paddling
Each one holding one of my mother's hands.
And she the big girl- some twelve years or so
All three stood still to smile through their hair
At the uncle with the camera. A sweet face
My mother's, that was before I was born
And the sea, which appears to have changed less
Washed their terribly transient feet.

Explanation chapter 1 : The Port rait of A Lady 

Explanation:  

Poet one day found a old photo of her mother which is pasted on a cardboard. Poet's mother had once been to a sea beach with her two little girl cousins who are holding one hand of mother. Poet's mother is of twelve years and older than her cousins. All the three stood still at a shallow water with flying hair while their uncle take photograph. This happens long before the poet born.

Sea looks unchanged throughout these long years which washed  their transient feet. Nature changes at snails pace while human beings changes rapidly.

Explanation in Hindi:

Poet एक दिन अपनी माँ का फोटो देखती है जो एक गत्ते पर चिपकाया गया है। यह फोटो उस समय लिया गया था ।

Mother and her  cousins

जब माँ बचपन में beach पर छुट्टी मनाने जाती है। उसके साथ उसकी दो चचेरी बहनें भी हैं जो उसका एक हाथ पकड़े हुए हैं। poet की मां उस वक़्त 12 साल की रही होगी और अपनी दोनों बहनों से बड़ी है। ये तीनों ही उथले पानी में खड़ी हैं। समय के साथ न बदलने वाला समुद्र उनके नशवर पैरों को दो रहा है। जब अंकल उनकी फोटो खींचते तो वे मुस्कुरा रही हैं और उनके बाल उड़ रहे हैं।

Stenza 2:

Some twenty-thirty years later
She'd laugh at the snapshot. "See Betty
And Dolly." she'd say, "and look how they
Dressed us for the beach." The sea holiday
Was her past, mine is her laughter. Both wry
With the laboured ease of loss.

Explanation:

After twenty-thirty years later when poet's mother is in her thirties or forties, looks  this photograph and laughs. She laughs at the way her cousins were dressed up for beach holiday. Beach holiday was her past as she has already lost her childhood. She recalls and get amused. Poet has also lost her mother's laughter because mother is already dead. Both - poet and mother - have lost something. Man is mortal and nature is permanent.

Explanation in Hindi:

तीस -  चालीस वर्ष बाद जब माँ की आयु 30 - 40 वर्ष है तब वह अपने इस फोटो को देख कर हंसती है और poet से कहती है कि देखो हमारे परेंट्स ने हमें कैसे कपड़े पहनाये थे। beach हॉलिडे  मेरी माँ का बीता समय था जिसे सोच कर वह प्रसन्न होती है और हंसती है। और माँ की हंसी poet का बीता समय है ये दोनों ही समय बीतने के साथ साथ खो गये हैं।

Stenza 3:

Now she's been dead nearly as many years
As that girl lived. And of this circumstance
There is nothing to say at all.
Its silence silences.
Explanation:
Mother is now dead about twelve years ago. The circumstances are changed completely now. After death of mother, poet feels sad and lonely.

Explanation in Hindi:

माँ की लगभग उतने साल पहले मृत्यु हो चुकी है जितनी आयु की लड़की इस फोटो में दिखाई दे रही है (लगभग 12 साल) । इन परिस्थितियों में कवि कुछ भी कहने योग्य नही है। खामोशी उसे घेरे रहती है। माँ के जाने के बाद वह उदास है तथा अकेला महसूस कर रही है।
