Stanza 1


When did my childhood go?


Was it the day I ceased to be eleven, 


Was it the time I realised that Hell and Heaven,


Could not be found in Geography, 


And therefore could not be, Was that the day?


Read the stanza carefully and answer the questions that follow:

Answer  : No, they are not sincere in their words. The didn't act as they preach.

Ans:  The stanza talks about the hypocrisy of adults.

Q. 2 : What according to the poem is involved in the process of growing up?

Ans: Different elements  such as rationalism, hypocrisy and individuality are involved in the process of growing up.
 As the child grows, he becomes rational. He begins to differentiate between real and imagery things, between truth and fantasy. The poet , at a certain time,  realized that hell and heaven could not be found in geography. So, they could not exist. It was the beginning of a rational stage. 

The second element is hypocrisy. As the child grows he does not remain the same as he was in his childhood. He talks and preaches of one thing but does not act accordingly. The poet wonders whether he lost his childhood when he realized that adults were not the same as they seemed  to be. They talked of love. They preached of love. But they did not behave or act with love. 

The third element that growing up involves is individuality. As one grows up one become independent in his thinking. His ideas become his own. He can think and act by using his own mind. He can use his mind which way he likes.

Ans. The poet feels that childhood is a period of innocence. A child believes whatever the  elders say. He is not rational. He does not differentiate between truth and fiction. He is not a hypocrite. Whatever he says he means. Whatever he talks, he acts upon it. There is no difference between his words and his actions. A child also knows no ego. He does not consider himself superior to others. He is innocent and pure at heart.

Q 4  :  Which do you think are the most poetic lines? Why?

Ans. The last four lines of the poem  are  the most poetic. These are full of poetry. The second line rhymes with the third and the first with the fourth. Other lines seem prosaic there is no rhyme scheme in them.   Meaning of these lines  is also poetic. They glorify the innocence of an infant. Innocence is hidden in the face of an infant.
