Ans: Different elements  such as rationalism, hypocrisy and individuality are involved in the process of growing up.
As the child grows, he becomes rational. He begins to differentiate between real and imagery things, between truth and fantasy. The poet , at a certain time,  realized that hell and heaven could not be found in geography. So, they could not exist. It was the beginning of a rational stage.

The second element is hypocrisy. As the child grows he does not remain the same as he was in his childhood. He talks and preaches of one thing but does not act accordingly. The poet wonders whether he lost his childhood when he realized that adults were not the same as they seemed  to be. They talked of love. They preached of love. Ans. The last four lines of the poem  are  the most poetic. These are full of poetry. The second line rhymes with the third and the first with the fourth. They were just the products of imagination.

Some More Short Answer Questions

Some Important Examination Questions

Q. 1. There are two voices in the poem. Who do they belong to? Which lines indicate this ?

Ans. The first voice belongs to the poet The first two lines indicates this e.g 'Who art thou?'
The second voice is that of the rain. This voice starts from the third line of the poem e.g 'I am the poem of Earth.'

Q. 2. What does the phrase "strange to tell" mean?

The poem asked  the rain who she was. It is
"strange to tell"  that the rain gave an answer.

Q. 3. There is a parallel drawn between rain and music. Which words indicate this? Explain the similarity between the two.

Ans.

In the third line of the poem, the rain says "I am the Poem of Earth." It means that rain is the music of earth. The last two lines of the poem :

For song. issuing from its birthplace, after fulfilment, wandering

Reck'd or unreck'd, duly with love returns.

make this parallel very clear. The song and rain, start their journey from their respective origins, fulfill their purpose and return to their respective birth places. The rain makes the earth pure and beautiful while music makes life pure and beautiful.

Q.4  How is the cyclic movement of rain brought out in the poem? Compare it with what you have learnt in science.

Ans.
In the poem, the poet says that rain originates out of land and the sea. She rises unseen and untouched to the sky. She is changed there completely into clouds and falls back to land and the sea in the form of water. It washes the dry land and the plants and helps seeds to grow.
We also learn in science that water vapours are formed on the land and  surface of the sea. They rise from there into the sky where clouds are formed. Then it rains on land. The water returns to the sea.

Q 5.
What does the rain do to the earth when it fails down on the earth?

Ans:
The rain on falling down to the earth finishes droughts and dust layers from the atmosphere  of the earth. She washes every thing and every atom  on earth. She gives life to the seeds.  They grow into plants. Without the rain, they would remain seeds, hidden and unseen underground. Rain gives life to them. She purifies and beautifies everything on the earth. In short, the rain gives life to the earth, its own origin.

Q 6
What is the intention of the poet in the poem?

Ans. :
The poet here seems to say that the rain has a voice of its own. She is as soft and soothing as  the music. Just as music refreshes everybody, so the rain refreshes everything on the earth. She is life giving, purifying and beautifying.
